High wind warning leads to travel trouble at Philadelphia airport
The high winds in the Delaware Valley have brought down trees, branches and utility lines, causing power outages. Here's what to know.

Strong winds will develop behind a winter storm crossing the Philadelphia region, with gusts between 40 and 60 mph possible throughout Sunday and into Monday. Due to the weather conditions, a high wind warning is in place through 6 p.m. Monday for the entire Delaware Valley.

Now is the time to secure any loose items outside. The high winds could bring down trees, branches and utility lines. Power outages have already been reported. Delays and cancellations are already adding up at Philadelphia International Airport and on Amtrak trains between Philadelphia and Wilmington. Due to the sharp drop in temperatures overnight into Monday, any loss of power could leave you in a deep freeze.

High winds have been reported around the region, including 71 mph gusts in Atlantic City.

What is a high wind warning?

This type of weather warning isn't something we hear about too often in Philadelphia. A high wind warning is issued when the following weather conditions are expected:

  • Sustained winds of 40 mph or higher for one hour or longer
  • Wind gusts of 58 mph or higher for any duration of time

Delays and cancellations are already being reported on more than 300 flights coming in and out of Philadelphia International Airport.

As of 6:15 p.m. Sunday, at least 290 flights are delayed and 71 have been canceled, according to FlightAware.com.

All flights to PHL were in a ground stop for about 30 minutes, but that's been lifted.

For the most up-to-date status of your flight, PHL recommends checking directly with your airline.

As for rail travel, all Amtrak services between Philadelphia and Wilmington are experiencing delays due to "power/communication issues in the area."

Power lines knocked down across Philadelphia region

At 40th and Locust streets in University City, power lines were knocked down due to the wind and caused power outages for several city blocks.

Police have the area blocked off as they wait for PECO crews to arrive.

In Bucks County, Bustleton Pike is closed between Gravel Hill Road and Stump Road due to several downed power lines, trees and poles, according to the Upper Southampton Township Police Department.

Multiple trees are down in Marple Township in Delaware County on Paxon Hollow, Cedar Grove and Crum Creek Roads due to the heavy winds, police said.

In Springfield Township in Delaware County, Beatty Road between Barry Drive and Sproul Road is closed due to downed power lines and trees, police said.
