UnitedHealthcare CEO fatally shot outside hotel
NEW YORK (Gray News) - The CEO of UnitedHealthcare was fatally shot outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan, according to several reports.
Brian Thompson was shot by a masked man outside the New York Hilton Hotel Wednesday morning, CNN reported. Police reported that the suspected gunman ran off.
According to the New York Post, Thompson was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he later died.
Police told news outlets the attack may have been targeted. Investigators said the gunman was seen apparently waiting for Thompson to arrive, according to CNN.
According to the Associated Press, UnitedHealthcare was scheduled to have its annual investors meeting Wednesday morning.
ABC News reported that Thompson was on his way to attend the meeting. They also reported his schedule during his time in New York was widely known.
The suspected gunman remains at large and the investigation remains ongoing.
The New York Post was first to report the shooting.
Thompson served as the CEO of UnitedHealthcare for more than three years, according to the Associated Press, and had been with the company since 2004.
UnitedHealthcare is the insurance arm of the health care company UnitedHealth Group Inc. They are the largest provider of Medicare Advantage plans and manage health insurance coverage for employers and state- and federally funded Medicaid programs.
