OPENING LINESAs a big fan of the National Football League there is so much that bothers me and gets on my nerves. Such as: 1. Way too many marginal pass interference penalties. 2. Way too many marginal roughing the passer penalties. 3. Way too much commentator talk about New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers who, to me, and so many others, is past his prime and no longer the “superstar” that some of the talking heads seem to think he is. 4. The continued reference to the once vaunted Dallas Cowboys as “America’s Team.” 5. Green Bay Packer fans who think they are better than the average fan … For what it is worth my five favourite NFL teams are: 1. Detroit Lions 2. Los Angeles Rams (only because of QB Matthew Stafford) 3. Pittsburgh Steelers 4. Washington Commanders 5. Buffalo Bills …As you may know, I am not a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and I am not a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball. Having said that, I do feel bad — sort of — for friends and acquaintances of mine who are fans of both the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. It must suck to be a fan of both for a long time now …In my perfect world of being an NHL fan both the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens will make the playoffs this season and a Canadian team — any Canadian team, even the Maple Leafs — will win the Stanley Cup this season … For what it is worth, my favourite Canadian NHL teams are: 1. Montreal Canadiens 2. Edmonton Oilers 3. Ottawa Senators 4. Calgary Flames 5. Winnipeg Jets 6. Toronto Maple Leafs 7. Vancouver Canucks …The more that time goes on the more I miss the Quebec Nordiques being a part of the NHL …Major League Baseball won’t be the same to me without the iconic Oakland Athletics being a part of it … For what it is worth my five favourite MLB teams are: 1. Detroit Tigers 2. New York Yankees 3. Los Angeles Dodgers 4. Chicago White Sox 5. Chicago Cubs … The more that time goes on the more I miss the Montreal Expos being a part of MLB … For what it is worth, my three favourite National Basketball Association teams are: 1. Boston Celtics 2. Detroit Pistons 3. Toronto Raptors … For what it is worth, my three favourite Canadian Football League teams are: 1. Hamilton Tiger-Cats 2. Montreal Alouettes 3. Winnipeg Blue Bombers …I miss the days when Sault Ste. Marie boys were mainstays in the CFL, such as receivers Rocky DiPietro and Andrew Gregg of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the late Norman Casola of the Toronto Argonauts …***RADIO WAVESAs a former part-time and full-time radio sportscaster at erstwhile CKCY in the Sault it does bother me that regular, lengthy, locally oriented sportscasts are no longer part of the programming here in town. Actually, they haven’t been for many years now.Radio, in general is not what it used to be in the Sault. Long gone are the days of having live announcers on board 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nowadays, most announcers not only pre-record their daily show for one station but as many as two or three or four, even more. When I listen to radio now, it is 95.1 Bridge FM. It is a classic hits format station and the music is my music of choice. It has a good feel to it and is family and locally owned.I get it that times have changed in many of the media platforms but what I don’t get is the lack of local sports information from the so-called mainstream radio stations of Sault Ste. Marie. Especially in a Twin Sault market that is so big on sports, especially hockey. Oh well.***HOUND SOUNDSI liked the way the Soo Greyhounds looked in last week’s 2-1 win over the visiting Flint Firebirds. Charlie Schenkel was on his A game between the pipes and while the Greyhounds were outshot, they were deserving of the narrow victory … The more I see forwards Brady Martin and Travis Hayes taking regular and extra shifts for the Greyhounds the more I like these two youngsters … Would like to see the Hounds add a couple of serviceable, Ontario Hockey League veteran defencemen. They don’t have to be top pair guys, fifth and sixth would be just fine.
