St. Patrick's Day is here and that means parades, parties, and celebrations taking place across the U.S. Many parades are only just returning from cancelations due to COVID-19 so undoubtedly thousands of revellers will be putting on their best green outfits and heading out to enjoy the festivities. Below are some of the biggest and best parades taking place this year.

New York, New York

The parade in New York is expected to be the largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the U.S., with more than 2 milllion spectators expected to attend.

New York City's 2022 St. Patrick's Day Parade will be held on Thursday March 17th, beginning promptly at 11am local time and ending at approximately 4:30pm local time. The Parade is expected to feature an estimated 200,000 people marching up Fifth Avenue, beginning at East 44th Street and ending at East 79th Street.

Spectators are advised to arrive as early as they would like, but the earlier the better to secure a good viewing spot along 5th Avenue.

The parade will stop at noon for a moment of silence to honor the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and to honor the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. A prayer will be said by Cardinal Dolan on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral with colorguard's from the New York fire and police departments, the 69th Regiment and Port Authority Police Department. They will then play Taps and Amazing Grace before the parade resumes and continues up Fifth Avenue.

James Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers will serve as this year's Grand Marshall. The parade is dedicated to essential workers and first responders and will also honor the Irish American labor movement, and mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Irish government.

Savannah, Georgia

The second largest St. Patricks Day parade in the country takes place in Savannah, Georgia, which is surprising considering its small population of 150,000 people.

The Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place on March 17th, at 10:15am local time, beginning at the intersection of Abercorn and Gwinnett and ending at the reviewing stand on Bull and Liberty. The parade will feature marchers, floats and other family-oriented entertainment.

Visitors to the parade can also enjoy the fountains in city parks and squares with water that has been dyed emerald green for the occasion.

San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio is hosting a whole weekend of St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

The St. Patrick's Festival & River Parade will begin with the dyeing of the River Walk green, on Thursday, March 17th at 1pm local time.

The Festival will take place on Villita Way in La Villita, on Friday and Saturday and will feature live music, food trucks, games and family-friendly entertainment.

The Bud Light St. Patrick's Day River Parade will take place on Saturday, beginning at 4pm local time near the Westin Hotel. A procession of 12 Irish-themed decorated floats will follow the parade route. Several bagpipers and other entertainers will grace the floats.

Scranton, Pennsylvania

Even though it may be more famous for The Office, Scranton Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the country if you compare participants to number of city residents.

The Scranton St. Patricks Parade begins at 11:45 am local time on Saturday, March 19th, following the Parade Day Mass at St. Peter's Cathedral at 10am and the Brian P Kelly memorial 2 mile footrace at 11am.

The parade will feature an estimated 12,000 participants including bagpipe bands, floats and big balloons.

The parade route begins on Wyoming Ave in front of St. Peter's Cathedral, proceeds to Lackawanna Ave. over Jefferson Ave. then down Spruce St to get to Washington Ave. where it passes the William J. Nealon Federal building and finally the reviewing stand. It ends at the corner of North Washington and Vine.

Organizers advise those wanting to drive to the parade and park in downtown Scranton to arrive early before the streets are closed at 9.30am on Saturday morning. Wyoming Ave is noted as a good spot for viewers, as are the bleachers near the reviewing booth on North Washington Ave.

Boston, Massachusetts

The St. Patrick's Day parade in Boston, Massachusetts, is the oldest parade in the U.S. Boston's Irish community first marched in 1737 to recreate the festivities of their homeland.

This year's South Boston St. Patrick's Day / Evacuation Day parade will take place on Sunday, March 20th, beginning at 1pm local time.

It begins at the Broadway 'T' Station and ends at Farragut Road, South Boston and is expected to follow West Broadway to Perkins Square and continue onto East Broadway, then following East Broadway to Farragut Road, marking the end of the parade. Unlike previous years, the parade will take a shortened route which was decided upon at the height of the Omicron outbreak.

Spectators are advised to find a spot anywhere along Broadway for the best views and are also encouraged to use public transportation since on-street parking will be limited. Those wishing to avoid the crowds are advised to view the parade from Medal of Honor Park or Thomas Park.
