HKs star swimmer Haughey wins gold at World Aquatics championships

HONG KONG – Olympic medalist Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China clinched the gold medal in the women's 200-meter freestyle at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) 2024 in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday.

Haughey secured the top spot with a time of 1:50:62, 0.87 seconds faster than first runner-up Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada. The bronze medal was claimed by Claire Weinstein of the United States with a time of 1:51:62.

On Monday morning, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui extended her congratulations to the swimming star.

“Not only did she display her extraordinary capabilities, but she also let Hong Kong athletes come into the world's spotlight,” Law said in a statement.

Haughey was the first Hong Kong athlete to win four Olympic medals.

During the Tokyo Olympics 2020, she won two silver medals in the women's 100m and 200m freestyle final, while clinching two bronze medals in the women's 100m and 200m freestyle final at this year’s Paris Olympic Games.
