Elena Sadiku in Celtic SWPL title roar as Glasgow City win cranks belief up to the max despite Rangers lead

Celtic's win over Glasgow City has the team “100 per cent” believing that they can go on and win a first SWPL title, according to manager Elena Sadiku.

Celtic have beaten league leaders Rangers and reigning champions City in their last two league outings. And Sadiku has insisted that there is still way more to come from her side. City made them sweat in the final five minutes of the game at Petershill Park after Carlee Giammona had pegged the score back to 2-1 after goals from Caitlin Hayes and Natasha Flint.

The Hoops prevailed to stay within one point of Rangers who still lead at the top after coming from a goal behind to beat Hibs earlier in the day. “100% I believe this team can win the league, especially if we perform like this,” said Sadiku. “It is not just one particular player. We had good goals against City from Caitlin and Natasha but what makes it so special is that we have big performances from lots of players.

“This is a team that 100 per cent can go into the title race capable of winning it. I have been pleased with the last two games but I know that we can do even better. What we put on was a good fight because Glasgow City at home is not an easy game.

“But we need to keep this going now and things will get better and better for us. These wins definitely gives us belief and confidence but there is nothing won just yet. We need to keep pushing for more.

“We just need to keep working but also try to relax too because we are coming into a period where we are going to play three games in a week, we have a semi-final and it will be very intense right up until May. It needs to make sure that we keep pushing all the right buttons but I feel as though we have been doing that.”

City manager Leanne Ross was frustrated that there was not more quality from her side. There is a break now for international football as Scotland kick off their European Championships qualification campaign but Ross has warned City that they will need to up their game when they face Rangers straight after the international break.

“Our performance levels weren’t there today,” she said. “When we come back after the international break the performance needs to be there because Rangers are a good side and it will be difficult to go to their home patch and try and win three points from there.”

Elsewhere in the top half of the table, Hearts beat Partick Thistle 3-0 to go three points clear of fifth-placed Hibs. At the bottom, Montrose’s 89th-minute winner sank Hamilton Accies while Motherwell beat Aberdeen to win 3-0 at K-Park. At Foundation Park, Spartans beat Dundee United 4-2.
