Bozy Ennis: Ryan Garcia Never Intended To Make Weight
Trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis, the father of welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, believes Ryan Garcia never intended to make weight for his fight against Devin Haney on Saturday, live on DAZN PPV.
Bozy thinks Ryan wanted to play head games with Haney from day one, but he does believe that he trained for the fight. He just didn’t want to get down to 140, which would be difficult for him.
It doesn’t make sense. With the $500K per pound bet that Ryan (24-1, 20 Kos) had with Haney, there’s no chance that he intentionally didn’t make weight. You could see that Ryan was eating well during camp, and he looked fleshy weeks before the fight.
He obviously carrying too much weight, and misjudged his ability to trim it off. I get the impression that Ryan procrastinated beginning the weight drop part during fight week, and by the time he started, it was too late.
What fans don’t know is Ryan weighed in at 143 lbs for his last fight against Oscar Duarte last December. Ryan wanted a catchweight for that match becaue he was having problems getting down to 140.
Trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis Weighs In
“I think he wanted to do that from the beginning. I don’t think he ever wanted to make weight,” said trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis to Fighthype about Ryan Garcia coming in heavy.
I don’t see it as a case of Ryan Garcia playing head games with Haney. He says he tried hard to get down to 140, but he wasn’t going to kill himself to lose the last three pounds. If Ryan had lost the weight, he would have been too weak to have any shot at winning.
“I think he was training because he looked like he was in shape. One thing about Devin is he can box and he’ll fight you. So, I don’t see him beating Devin unless he catches Devin with a hook, knocks him down or knocks him out. But I don’t see him beating Devin.
“I think Devin will be moving up later on down the line. So, I see that being a big mega-fight,’ said Bozy about Haney eventually moving up to 147, and fighting his son, Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.
Bill Haney’s Reaction
“It’s going to cost him in his pocket and it’s going to cost him in his a**, because Devin is going to tax him,” said Bill Haney to Fighthype, giving his thoughts on Ryan Garcia coming in overweight during Friday’s weigh-in for his fight against Devin Haney on Saturday.
If Haney goes to war with Ryan on Saturday, he may not make it out of the ring with his unbeaten record intact. Haney looked in bad shape at the weigh-in, showing dark circles under both eyes. He didn’t look as bad as he had for his two previous fights, but he still looked very drained.
