Urgent recall for frozen waffle brand from major retailers amid new listeria risk

Several varieties of frozen waffles - including Walmart's Great Value and Target's Good & Gather - have been recalled due to a possible listeria contamination. 

More than 500 products manufactured by TreeHouse Foods and sold in the US and Canada are believed to be infected. 

Apart from Walmart and Target, the recalled products are also sold at Dollar General, Aldi's, Food Lion, Tops, Hannaford, H-E-B, PriceChopper, Publix, Schnucks, Southeastern Grocers and Harris Teeter. 

Some of the items include Best Choice 12.3oz Chocolate Chip Waffles, Clover Valley 12.3oz Buttermilk Waffles, Tops 12.3oz Blueberry Waffles, Good and Gather 12.3oz Homestyle Waffles, Good and Gather 12.3oz Buttermilk Waffles, Great Value 12.3oz Homestyle Waffles and Great Value 12.3oz Buttermilk Waffles. 

In a press release, the manufacturer said consumers should check if they have the any of the recalled products in their freezers - suggesting that either they be thrown out or returned to the place of purchase for credit.

'TreeHouse Foods, Inc. is voluntarily recalling certain frozen waffle products listed below due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes,' TreeHouse Foods wrote in a statement.

'This recall is being carried out with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Consumers and retailers can identify the UPC on the back of the carton, and the Lot Code and Best By Date for these products on the end of the carton.

'Consumers should check their freezers for any of the products listed above and dispose of them or return the recalled product to the place of purchase for credit.'

It also confirmed that no case of listeria infection caused by the frozen waffles has yet been reported.

'There have been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled products to date. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider,' the company suggested.

Eating food with Listeria monocytogenes, the full name of the bacteria, can cause a person to develop a listeriosis infection, which is extremely dangerous for elderly adults, those with compromised immune systems and pregnant women along with their newborns.

Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. All of these symptoms can come after diarrhea or other digestion issues.

Pregnant women can experience miscarriages, stillbirths or premature delivery of their infant if infected with listeria.

Great Value 12.3oz Homestyle Waffles have been recalled 

This recall comes a week after BrucePac recalled more than  9.9 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry that was contaminated with Listeria.

The Oklahoma-based company announced that the products were produced from June 19, 2024, to as recently as October 8, 2024. They were shipped to other stores and distributors throughout the United States.

Product labels and the list of products affected in the recall will be made available imminently, according to a notice from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

For now, any products that bear establishment numbers '51205 or P-51205' inside or under the USDA inspection mark are subject to the recall.
