Though both Matthew Knies and Nick Robertson were resigned to the probability that the Leafs are going to have to get by for a while without Morgan Rielly, the reaction by the veteran defenceman to Ridly Greig’s empty-net goal in Ottawa on Saturday was applauded by both.

“He sticks up for the respect of our team,” Knies said on Tuesday morning after the Leafs’ optional skate at Scotiabank Arena. “That kind of stuff, the punishment, is out of our control and out of his control.
“But it’s pretty big for a guy like that who has been here for so long to stick up for us and show us that we don’t want to be disrespected and that we’re a hard-nosed team. It was a meaningful thing for our team.”
Rielly’s cross-check to the head of Greig — who drew Rielly’s ire after firing a slapshot into the empty Toronto net to ensure a 5-3 Senators victory — earned Rielly a hearing with the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety.

Because of inclement weather in New York, what was supposed to be an in-person hearing early on Tuesday afternoon was change to be done virtually. An announcement from the NHL on the length of the suspension for Rielly — who never has been suspended by the NHL — could come as early as late Tuesday afternoon.
Either way, Rielly won’t be in the lineup against the St. Louis Blues as the Leafs begin a three-game home stand.
The thinking is that Rielly will get five or six games, but with the unpredictable ways of the DOPS, nothing could be assumed with certainty.
“Especially for me now, it’s game day, it’s out of my hands,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “The process will play itself out and we’ll deal with the result.”

Robertson was thinking along the same lines as Knies.
“I think it shows the leadership he has and character,” Robertson said. “We lean on him for the skill and production, but for him to sacrifice, to stand up for our team … Mo responded the way that our team needs to respond too. We need to come out and earn our respect back.
“It sucks he is going to be out, maybe for a couple of weeks, but he is a leader and he shows ways to lead like that.”
Rielly was assessed a five-minute major for cross-checking and a game misconduct for the play, which came at 19:54 of the third period. Greig was not injured and is expected to be in the Ottawa lineup on Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
