The super producer channels his inner superhero in the series’ first issue, ‘The Rise’

It didn’t take mystic powers for Metro Boomin to become one of the most prolific producers of the last decade, but in a new comic book series, he tries some on for size. On June 14, Metro – born Leland Wayne – will release the first issue of The Metroverse, where he stars as himself, a talented musician – only bulletproof, with super strength and speed that intensify the more he uses them for good.

Just 4,000 print copies will go on sale at midnight Eastern Time on the site Metroverse.Media. Orders will include an exclusive art print and enamel pin. They will also be sold (along with limited edition merchandise) at an interactive pop-up at Complex Los Angeles at 433 N Fairfax Ave on Thursday, June 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Pacific Time.

Superhero mythology has been a theme across Metro’s work in music, including his debut album, 2018’s Not All Heroes Wear Capes, his joint album with 21 Savage, Savage Mode II (which includes action-flick narration from Morgan Freeman), and his platinum, Grammy nominated sophomore album Heroes & Villains. Metro was nominated for Producer of the Year at the 2024 Grammys as well. Last summer, he helmed the official soundtrack for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and had a cameo animated into the blockbuster film as well. “It’s a dream come true to have my own comic book on shelves,” Metro Boomin tells Rolling Stone in a statement.

In the first issue of The Metroverse, called The Rise, an evil media mogul who controls their city’s criminals tries to turn Metro into one of his “sponsored performers.” (“Their unbelievable forms are demographically specific!” the comic says of a few of the mogul’s minions.) When a greater system out to sap artists of their autonomy is revealed, Metro fights back. Metro Boomin (the real one) is producing the series with Zero Zero, social strategy and merchandise company. Its illustrated by Vasilis Lolos and written by Ryan Cady.
