Cozumel, Q.R. — Nearly 2,000 athletes from 54 countries participated in Ironman Cozumel 2024. The event was kicked off Sunday by Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez.

The 7:00 a.m. start marked the sixteenth edition of Ironman Cozumel. The Magical Town of Cozumel welcomed 1,951 triathletes from 54 countries, including nearly 100 professional triathletes, who compete alongside participants in age categories.

The 3.8-kilometer swim began at the Fonatur Marina and ended in front of Chankanaab Park. The course is shaped like an inverted “J” and the turns are made counter-clockwise. This stage of the competition is considered one of the most spectacular in the world, thanks to the crystal-clear waters of the Mexican Caribbean.

Belgium, the United States and France took the first three places overall in the 16th edition of the Full Ironman Cozumel 2024, which also included the Latin American Championship to designate five places in the world championships in Kona, Hawaii and Nice, France in 2025. Eduardo Pérez Sandi was the first Mexican to reach the finish line in 19th position.

Amidst applause, shouts of joy and support, the winners of the men’s and women’s divisions rang the victory bell and crossed the finish line. “This is a sports competition that is already part of Cozumel’s history that drives us as the Island of Sports,” said Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez.

The overall winner was Belgian Bart Aernouts, who stopped the clock at seven hours, 39 minutes and 24 seconds after a battle in the marathon stage on the emblematic Rafael E. Melgar Avenue with Chris Leifermant from the United States who clocked 07:45:12.

In third place was Frenchman Leon Chavalier who stopped the clock at 07:46:58, joining the three best triathletes in the competition.

In the women’s category, the winners were Anne Reischmann in first place with a time of 08:34:08, while second place went to Lisa Perterer from Austria and third place went to Frenchwoman Justine Mathieux with a time of 08:51:03.
