ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Marcus Rashford fired home a stunning opening goal to give Manchester United an early lead against City in the 192nd Manchester derby.
Pep Guardiola's side were aiming to keep pace with Liverpool in an intriguing Premier League title fight with Jurgen Klopp's team and Arsenal. They travel to Anfield in seven days' time for a pivotal encounter.
They began in dominant fashion, hogging the ball and putting their visitors under pressure.
However, Rashford lashed home a sensational 25-yard strike via the underside of the crossbar to send the away supporters in raptures.

Man City vs Man United live updates, highlights, and commentary
37th minute: De Bruyne (yes, he's starting another entry) to Foden, nice first touch this time and he pings a shot. United body in the way.
35th minute: De Bruyne lines up the shot, City's 12th of the half, and drags tamely wide. Guardiola will be buoyed by the amount of joy his team are getting around the United penalty area but they've been terribly imprecise with a lot of it.
33rd minute: De Bruyne pings one of those De Bruyne crosses. Varane does well to clear, Rodri meets it first time and Onana shovels behind. City have had so many corners they seem to have run out of ideas what to do with them.
32nd minute: Walker and Stones with a couple of lovely line-breaking passes. Doku shoots into Dalot, the ball spins into the air and Haaland nods over. A half chance at best.
30th minute: Doku, who was just unceremoniously dumped over by Casemiro, exchanges passes with Silva but can only slice well wide.
28th minute: Doku is crowded out as United again get away with giving the ball away in their own third. They surely cannot keep getting away with it.
25th minute: Bernardo Silva's cross strikes Dalot on his tucked in elbow. Silva doesn't appeal bit this is checked by VAR. No penalty. City's attacking wave continues. Rodri's shot is deflected behind for another corner. This whole game has felt like injury time.
23rd minute: Onana wallops the ball straight back to City, who can't make the most of it. Now Evans strides forward. Really. Rashford should score at the back post but misses his kick. This is wildly frantic.
19th minute: Big chance for Foden! De Bruyne plays the England man through. He can never quite get the ball out of his feet through, Varane marshalls him excellently and Onana makes the save.
17th minute: Huge chance for United.. or it should have been. Fernandes gets the better of Stones on halfway and Rashford has a whole half to tear into. Guardiola is on his haunches. But back comes Walker ferociously to tackle his England team-mate.
16th minute: Doku finds the underlapping Silva, who cuts back to De Bruyne. The Belgium star can't get a bouncing ball under control and skews wide left-footed. United' playing out is a fiasco again, with Evans the culprit this time, but they don't pay too steep a price.
14th minute: There's a frantic feel now. City bundle the ball to Foden inside the box. He shoots right footed and Onana saves with his legs. The United goalkeeper unfussily claims the resulting corner.
13th minute: United looking to make the most of their advantage and Ederson gets up to a corner under his crossbar under pressure. City dart up the other end and have a corner of their own. Ooofff, that's a dicey clearance from Fernandes. Almost into his own net.
8th minute: GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Marcus Rashford!!!!!
Oh my good grief! Pick that one out! Fernandes manages to hold up an attack from Onana's long ball. He lays it back to Rashford who unleashes hell form 25 yards. In off the crossbar, no chance for Ederson. Script torn up!
OH MY DAYS MARCUS RASHFORD.

6th minute: Onana's short goal kick is cut out by Silva. Finally United get forward, Garnacho gets to stretch his legs and Ederson pouches a cross that Ake took the pace off.
5th minute: Doku sizes up Dalot and tries to catch Onana out at his near post. It ripples the top of the netting.
4th minute: We're playing on. Casemiro arguably a lucky chap. United could do with getting hold of the ball and/or getting out of their own half at some point.
3rd minute: I think Doku just booked the ball into Fernandes' errrmmm groin area. It bounces well for City. Stones bursts into the box and wants a penalty. That'll be checked. Casemiro into the back of him.
2nd minute: De Bruyne takes it to Silva on the edge of the box. Return pass, then he finds Foden, whose shot from the edge is deflected over. United get the second corner away.
1st minute: City kickoff. Silva all the way back to Edersin and they get in their passing. Haaland with some nice hold-up play. Doku wins a corner off Dalot.
3 mins before kickoff: Here are the teams into the late winter sunshine. Blue Moon ringing around the Etihad now. We're good to go.
20 mins before kickoff: So, a reminder of the situation at the top of the Premier League table. City are aiming to win and trim Liverpool's advantage at the top of the table to a solitary point ahead of their trip to Anfield next weekend. Champions League qualification is a long shot for United. After wins for Aston Villa and Tottenham yesterday, they can't really afford to lose much more ground.
40 mins before kickoff: As discussed, City are heavy favourites going into this one and those confirmed lineups do nothing to shake that perception. The Etihad Stadium DJ playing 2000 dance smash Toca's Miracle (with it's "I need a miracle") refrain feels a little bit mischievous. Banger though.
55 mins before kickoff: Here's the City team. Jeremy Doku is the beneficiary from Jack Grealish's groin injury and starts on the left wing. Manuel Akanji drops to the bench to accommodate Ruben Dias in the starting back four. Josko Gvardiol returns among the substitutes.

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in. Rasmus Hojlund and Lisandro Martinez each arrived with the United team in tracksuits to briefly cause some brouhaha. Turns out they're both still not fit and are here to support their team-mates and no more. Jonny Evans and Kobbie Mainoo come in for Sofyan Amrabat and Antony.

1hr 15 mins before kickoff: The City team arrived to a rapturous reception from the home fans a short while ago. Jack Grealish is the only notable absentee and we knew that was going to be the case already as the England international nurses his latest groin injury. Confirmed team news will be with us shortly.
1 hr 50 mins before kickoff: City have won four of the past five editions of this fixture, including last season's FA Cup final, and have racked up the goals in the past two on home turf, winning the Etihad Stadium derbies in 2022 4-1 and 6-3. United have only lost once in 2024, but last weekend's tragicomic 2-1 loss to Fulham at Old Trafford felt particularly damaging and Erik ten Hag is without Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund and other key personnel.
City are favourites here, no doubt, especially after Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne made merry at Luton in the FA Cup, but there is the wider context of a three-pronged title race entering its final stretch. Events like Liverpool's 99th minute winner at Nottingham Forest on Saturday can sometimes do funny things to rival teams. Pep Guardiola's side have typically been unflustered by such fluctuations but no team is infallible before we even consider the wildcard tension of derby day.
