She won a Tony Award for her stage work, but she’ll be long remembered as “Alice.”

Lavin was already a success on Broadway when she was chosen to star in a new TV sitcom in 1976 based on the Oscar-winning film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.”  She played a widow raising a 12 year old son while working in a roadside diner.

Linda Lavin’s died yesterday of complication from lung cancer.

She was 87
