Johnny Depp says he doesn't resent Hollywood for being "against" him: "Hatred requires caring"
Johnny Depp has suggested that he doesn’t have “any ill feelings toward” Hollywood amid his recent troubles.
The actor has been involved in legal battles with former wife Amber Heard in recent years, winning a defamation case against her in 2022 in the US; the jury also found that Depp had defamed Heard through his attorney. In 2020, he lost a libel case against The Sun in the UK.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his new film Modì, which is about the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, Depp compared the “vast wilderness” that the subject matter was in to his own, saying that it “taught [him] a whole lot”.
The actor then reflected further on recent comments he made about his own life being turned “into a soap opera” in the past few years.
“Honestly, I can sit here this very second and think about all the hit pieces, and how everybody was against me, and yeah yeah yeah he is off the map … endless stuff,” he said.
“I can remember it all. Went through it all. Some of it was not the most beautiful time, some of it was hilarious. Some of it was mad. The thing is, it simply just was, and it simply just is. So, for me, it happened. I learned, man.
“Everything that we experience, whether you’re given a snow cone or walking your dog, you learn something somewhere along the way,” Depp continued.
“So I don’t have any ill feelings toward anyone. I don’t have this great reserve of hatred, because hatred requires caring. Why carry that baggage?”
Speaking further on comments he made about not needing Hollywood anymore, the actor added: “I had a few bouts with Hollywood over their particular easy way and the fluid three-act structure and all the stuff that is predictable. And I am sorry, but I had to get in there and whip it around a little bit….”
Depp recently appeared in Jeanne Du Barry, a French historical drama in which he portrays King Louis XV. Its director, Maïwenn, claimed earlier this year that it was “difficult” to work with the actor, and that the “crew were scared” of him.
Elsewhere, last month fans speculated that Depp had fixed his teeth based on a video on social media.
