How I Met Your Mother stars reunite for popular TV series

How I Met Your Mother stars Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders had a reunion this week, in the latest episode of Apple TV+'s Shrinking.

Segel leads the show as Jimmy Laird, a shrink who decides to pursue an unorthodox and unethical way of talking to his patients following the death of his wife. Smulders made a guest appearance in the episode 'Changing Patterns' as a woman Jimmy tries to buy a car from.

Speaking about working with her former co-star again, Smulders said to Entertainment Weekly: "How lucky am I? I just got a call from [co-creator] Bill Lawrence about it. I don't know how involved Jason was in putting it together behind the scenes, but I was so happy.

"First of all, I'm such a huge fan of the show," she continued. "It's such a beautiful show, and it was such an honor to be able to come into this amazing cast and play for a couple of scenes. Like what an absolute dream! And then also, I get to work with Jason again, which I very much miss doing."

While Smulders and Segel's How I Met Your Mother characters Robin and Marshall were just friends, the few scenes that their Shrinking characters Sofi and Jimmy shared showcased a mutual attraction, which is new dynamic for the actors.

Whether it will be picked up on isn't something that Smulders is aware of just yet, stating: "I don't know if we'll build on that. I have no idea what's in store, but it was nice to see this character having a flirtation and being surprised by that."

Meanwhile, Shrinking creator Brett Goldstein's new film was recently announced to be coming to Apple TV+.

Shrinking season 2 currently drops new episodes on Wednesdays on Apple TV+. A third season has been announced.
