Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Uriah Hall
Walkouts: Alrighty, this show is finally about to get on the road. Hall walks out with a black t-shirt emblazoned with BE REAL on it in big bold letters. Is he real? Are any of us? Well, we’re going to find out soon as he’s in the ring and ready for a real-check with JCC Jr.
Chavez Jr. out with a head band and a poncho with MEXICO in the Mexican tricolor. Who ever would have thought this is a fight that would happen? Welp, let’s get to it.
Round 1: Hall comes out jabbing early as Chavez Jr. circles the outside, looking for an opening. He’s circling freely as Hall doesn’t have the footwork to cut the ring while they’re fresh. Chavez Jr. lands a decent counter here or there and a body jab but output is very low for both men to start. Hall really relying on the jab. It’s about the only thing he’s thrown. Chavez Jr. rips to the body well and lands a good left hook at the end of the round as Hall chases him.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Chavez Jr.
Round 2: Chavez Jr. still showing basic ringcraft and that’s putting him ahead at this point. Hall jabbing and plodding onward, and Chavez Jr. moves around, picking his spots. He lands a decent left hook at the end of a combination when Hall got him backed up. Then he moves again. This is such a casual pace and the boo birds are starting to show themselves. But then Hall gets Chavez Jr. against the ropes and lands a body shot.
Chavez Jr. presses out with a combination. He seems content to just slightly outwork Hall if he can. Or perhaps he’s just wary of a big shot in return. Hall certainly tries with a four-punch combination but all of them are blocked and nothing else of significance happens.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Chavez Jr., 20-18 Chavez Jr. overall.
Round 3: Again Hall takes the center and starts jabbing. He’s starting to have more success cutting the ring now as Chavez Jr. tires. He’s landing the jab through the guard now some. Chavez Jr. mixing up his targets better though, working the body plenty, and Hall is either on offense or on defense. There’s no blend to his game.
Chavez Jr. starting to open up in space a little more. He’s feeling confident, but still cautious. Hall keeps trying the same jab into a looping right and it’s going nowhere. The crowd is restless but just before the round ends theres a decent exchange from both men with hooks.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Chavez Jr., 30-27 Chavez Jr. overall.
Round 4: Hall right back on it. Marching forward and sticking the jab out there. Chavez Jr. moving away but Hall does finally get him to the ropes early and drops a combination with a good uppercut in there. His best work of the fight. Chavez Jr. gets out and back on the bike.
Chavez Jr.’s offense has fallen off this round. Hall having more success getting him to the ropes and in the corner. Can’t find a big punch yet, but he’s getting the run of play. Jab landing more and it’s forcing Chavez Jr. to start to throw back now. Hall again gets Chavez Jr. on the ropes but still can’t find the big shot. At least not yet.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Hall, 39-37 Chavez Jr. overall.
Round 5: This has not been a great fight and I have little hope the final rounds will change things. It certainly starts the same as the past rounds, with Hall marching on. Chavez Jr. tries to throw a zippy hook to get respect but comes up with air. And he doesn’t have the legs to circle as well as he did before. Hall takes advantage with a sequence of shots right down the middle that gets Chavez Jr. moving backwards.
Hall coming on strong now as Chavez Jr. looks like he might be spent. In-fighting along the ropes now and Chavez Jr. actually doing good body work here, but Hall is competing. Chavez Jr. rips a big hook to the body when they break. Small uppercuts inside. Both me chucking them in there and with 10 seconds left they star brawling! Neither man lands anything huge but the arena has come to life.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Hall, 48-47 Chavez Jr. overall.
Round 6: Final round and all to play for and now Chavez Jr. is coming forward. Maybe he knows he doesn’t have to preserve gas anymore. But Hall rips to the body as he comes in. Again. Hall is ready to fire counters when Chavez Jr. steps in, so instead Chavez Jr. starts retreating. Hall takes the opportunity to advance with combinations but can’t land. Does find a good hook to the body when Chavez Jr. fires back though.
Not long left now and Hall was pulling away but Chavez Jr. empties it the tank. Gets caught with a shot though and Hall has him along the ropes again. Chavez Jr. is fine but bad optics. More inside fighting. 20 seconds left and Chavez Jr. really starts going. He lands a nasty hook and then goads Hall who can’t get anything back before the round ends.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Chavez Jr., 58-56 Chavez Jr. overall.
OFFICIAL DECISION: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. def. Uriah Hall via unanimous decision (59-55, 59-55, 58-56)
Tony Aguilar vs. Corey Marksman
Walkouts: Marksman is out in a green and blue robe and he takes his time getting to the ring. Nothing much to report here. Maybe Aguilar will offer more.
Aguilar comes out with a giant Mexican flag behind him. He’s in a black vest and all smiles. Great energy around this man as he walks to the ring.
Round 1: Marksman takes the center early and comes out firing. Aguilar changing levels and returning. 10 seconds in and this is already better than the previous fight. Both men really boxing in there, changing levels, battling footwork, trying to get angles. And Aguilar is the first to succeed as he lands a nasty right hand at the end of a combo. Marksman eats it well though and stays in the pocket.
Aguilar comes in and a clinch ensues. Punches from both before they’e broken up. Back at range and Aguilar snapping that jab, causing Marksman to return the favor. Marksman lands a right hook when Aguilar gets caught overextending. Aguilar comes back with another combo. This is real boxing and fun to watch.
Marksman lands a beautiful shovel hook as Aguilar dips and that sets off some real action. Aguilar comes back with hear and Marksman returns with both men slinging and landing until just before the bell.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aguilar.
Round 2: Good exchanges to kick the round off. Both men trading jabs and straights. Marksman lands the first good punch with a counter hook as Aguilar got caught over his skis. Marksman starting to settle in now. He’s very comfortable. Aguilar starting to be a little more defensive.
Another good exchange. Marksman lands a big shot but Aguilar gets his own hook in a few moments later. Aguilar really relying on his hooks now and he’s getting moved around the ring a lot. Marksman lands a mean check hook that puts a jolt through Aguilar. He’s got his timing and it’s starting to pay off.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Marksman, 19-19 overall.
Round 3: Aguilar getting a bit wild with his offense now. Still staying tight with his defense but Marksman puts an incredible 9-punch combo on him that looked like Lomachenko with the angle cuts. Aguilar responds by biting down and brawling and that gets Marksman’s respect as he eats one.
Aguilar eats another shot and forces a clinch and he’s really holding this one. Might be stunned because he’s grabbing a lot now. Marksman finding some decent shots in here. Marksman lands a mean right hook during an exchange and again Aguilar goes back to brawling. He doesn’t have much of that in him though and it’s clinches where Marksman lands another few short shots inside.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Marksman, 29-28 Marksman overall.
Round 4: Marksman holding the center without issue now. Aguilar tries to get him off-kilter with a wild combination that comes up with air. Bit slower pace this round. Marksman can’t quite get home with much offense and Aguilar being a touch more patient. Also, some clinching.
Marksman is setting a good range though. He’s not getting hit almost at all now. Unless Aguilar clinches. Then both trade body work inside. More of that as the least interesting round of the fight ends.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Marksman, 39-37 Marksman overall.
Round 5: Round starts hot with both men standing in and whipping hooks at each other. Nothing lands but they’re going. That tapers off though and Aguilar is backing up, waiting to explode. Marksman not giving him the window yet. Does land a decent left though.
Marksman lands his own but he’s slowing. Much more cautious. Aguilar starting to build momentum and goes to the body. Marksman spins him to the corner and tries to tee off but can’t find much. Short time and Marksman swings but misses all his shots. Hard round to score.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aguilar, 48-47 Marksman overall.
Round 6: Clinch almost immediately to start the sixth. Break and Aguilar is holding the center, working his jab. Marksman with plenty of feints now as he moves around. Neither man is landing much anymore. What started out strong has fallen off. Aguilar lands a glancing right hand and Marksman tries to get it back but no joy.
Marksman starts to force the issue a bit but he can’t land anything of substance. Aguilar is showing good defense. But now Marksman lands a stinging pair of hooks as Aguilar got caught napping. Aguilar returns a three punch combo of his own and then Marksman gets Aguilar to the ropes and fires uppercuts and hooks. Aguilar blocks most and some good infighting from both men ends the round.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aguilar, 57-57 overall.
Round 7: Aguilar comes out trying to get something going and eats a good combination for his trouble when he then moved to clinch. Marksman still showing great speed in there, even if the volume has dropped off. But he zips a combo in and maybe Marksman has a second wind. Aguilar stymies that by clinching.
Aguilar is really clinching a lot now. Running in and bailing to the hips if he fails. Does land a good straight to the body though. Then an uppercut but Marksman gets two back on him and Aguilar starts swinging for respect. He eats a big shot and then moves into the clinch and here come some roughhouse tactics, head pulls and uppercuts. Aguilar showing the fool toolbox out there.
Marksman still not firing a ton of volume but he’s landing well and puts another clean right hand before the bell for good measure.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Marksman, 67-66 Marksman overall.
Round 8: Last round and this fight may be up for grabs. And both men come out with fire as a results. Action immediately and then Aguilar clinches and things get grimy inside. Break but another clinch. Aguilar is really trying to get some MMA dirty boxing on in here and the ref is allowing it. Marksman not pleased with that but they break and both lands good jabs.
Aguilar roughhousing as a way of life now, bullying Marksman back and ripping uppercuts with his head in Marksman’s chest. Marksman getting a few good shots in a range, but he’s getting smothered now. Good hook from Marksman as the brawl before another clinch. Aguilar breathing heavy and eats a right hand over the top.
Both men in the center and it’s time to throw down. Hooks for days, no quarter given. Marksman backs to the corner after an exchange and it’s tough in fighting from here on out. Short uppercuts and hooks until the bell.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Aguilar, 76-76 overall.
