“We face global threats in the US elections,” says Senator Mark Warner
The threats to the US elections are not only domestic, as there is information that some countries such as Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are using deepfakes and highly improved disinformation to interfere in the results of the upcoming elections, the senator reported. Mark Warner.
Mark Warner, a Democratic senator from Virginia and chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, reported that artificial intelligence is being used by foreign agents to manipulate messages directed at American voters.
The senator commented during a briefing held by Ethnic Media Services, that many electoral officials resigned or retired due to some of the threats that were being made, so fear and concern have caused participation in the electoral process to decrease.
"The bad news is that it's easier for our adversaries - China, Russia and Iran, in particular those three - to attack us because they've realized that information and disinformation fueled by certain political candidates who are willing to believe crazy things on the Internet that have no basis in fact is effective but also cheap," Senator Warner added.
Social media and technology platforms in general are devoting fewer resources in terms of monitoring their content, generating a flow of false information that can change the way a candidate is perceived without being real.
"An example of that was the artificial intelligence that rushed to shut down efforts to accuse Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Waltz of inappropriate behavior, it was a case of manipulation using artificial intelligence backed by the Russian community in terms of obtaining late information, emphasizing disinformation to African-American communities in the United States. This election cycle there has been a proportional focus of disinformation to Latino communities in the United States and to Jewish communities in the United States," explained the former governor of Virginia.
Historically, many countries have had a history of government interference in disinformation for their own purposes, however, the United States has worked to have better monitoring and tools to protect the information handled on various platforms with the aim of ensuring that real and truthful information is greater and gains more ground in the digital area.
