How I Met Your Father: The Main Characters, Ranked By Intelligence
The new show How I Met Your Father is a spin-off to the popular series How I Met Your Mother. The original show focused on the lives of a group of friends in the city, all while counting down to the day that the protagonist would meet his future wife. So far, the new spin-off follows a similar format but takes place seventeen years later.

This time jump allows for a new generation to fall in love with a brand new group of relatable characters. They use Snapchat and Instagram, and of course, Tinder, introducing a whole new world of dating problems to the How I Met Your Mother franchise. While audiences are still getting to know these characters, it's clear they are an intelligent group - some more so than others.
8 CharlieCharlie is a member of an aristocratic family, but he is completely broke. He moved to America in order to be with Valentina and was financially disowned by his family.
The move was a brave and romantic one, which is very fitting to Charlie's loyal-puppy-dog personality. He is certainly not dumb, but he can be a little clueless since he is used to a much more affluent life than those led by the rest of the group.
7 EllenEllen is Jesse's younger adopted sister, and one of the funniest characters in How I Met Your Father. She is recently divorced and moved to the city in order to get close to her brother and start anew. While she is still a little obsessed with her ex-wife, she is eager to learn new things and even more so to meet new women.
Ellen has the energy of someone who is very intelligent, but a little too lazy to try. She doesn't put much thought into most of her actions and often finds herself in awkward predicaments. As the show goes on, audiences can assume that Ellen will learn some lessons but for now, she doesn't seem to be the best decision-maker.
6 ValentinaIn one of HIMYF's similarities to How I Met Your Mother, the show has a character who isn't afraid to have a lot of partners. Valentina is Sophie's adventurous roommate. She is an aspiring stylist and often travels the world, growing her career and meeting new men. She takes pride in her own sexual expression and is a strong, confident feminist.
While Valentina is a great friend, she can be reckless with feelings. She forgets at times that not everyone is so confident and as sure of themselves as she is, and that can result in her hurting her considerably less blunt boyfriend, Charlie. Valentina has street smarts, undoubtedly, but she could use a little more development in emotional awareness.
5 JesseJesse is the creative, musical type who has been scorned in love. He was publically humiliated when his failed marriage proposal went viral on the internet, so he is less than enthusiastic about his future in love.

While Jesse seems to be adequately intelligent academically, socially, and creatively, he has a very pessimistic outlook on life. His self-deprecating sense of humor makes him charming, but also makes it difficult for him to move forward in his personal growth. Undoubtedly he will continue to be inspired by Sophie's optimistic view of love, but for now, he still has some learning to do.
4 DrewDrew is Sophie's first real boyfriend of the series, and therefore probably not "the father." However, he is still a good character. He is the vice-principal of the school that Jesse works at and has a love of good literature and fancy wines.
Sophie is drawn to him for his very grown-up level of maturity, but also his kind and respectful nature. He has more academic intelligence than Sophie, however, he has already shown signs of dishonesty that alert fans to the fact that he may not have great relationship intelligence. He lied to Sophie about his ex, and wasn't upfront with her about his opinions, which is a common trope in rom-coms that ruins relationships.
3 SophieSophie may be more of an artist than an academic. She makes it clear that she is not much into reading books when she has to buy a bunch from goodwill in order to impress Drew. However, Sophie is intelligent in more ways than one.
Sophie was raised with a very emotionally immature mother and was, therefore, forced to take on the caretaker role from a young age. This forces a person to grow up quickly, giving them skills in not only taking care of themselves but handling the emotions of those around them. Despite all of this, Sophie has managed to maintain a positive perspective on life and love - Sophie is very similar to Ted from HIMYM in that regard - making her one of the most emotionally intelligent characters on the show.
2 HannahHannah lives in L.A., so she does not always appear with the group. She is Sid's fiancée and works as a surgeon, making her one of the most academically accomplished members of the group. She has a strong sense of humor, which is what first drew her to Sid, and seems to be friendly and compassionate.

From what audiences can tell, Hannah isn't just book smart, however. In her relationship with Sid, she is always willing to communicate how she is feeling and what she needs, while also remaining aware and sensitive to his feelings. This shows that Hannah doesn't just have the mind of a surgeon, but the heart of a truly caring doctor.
1 SidSid is Jesse's best friend and roommate in Marshall and Ted's original apartment from How I Met Your Mother. He is funny, kind-spirited, and enthusiastic. He is introduced to viewers leading up to his proposal to his fiancée, Hannah, and he was immediately likable.
Sid met his fiancée in medical school but found that becoming a doctor wasn't truly his dream. He quit school in order to buy his favorite bar in New York, which is now the hangout place of the group. This decision seemed directionless, but Sid demonstrated his ability to be realistic about what he actually wanted and he made it happen. Between obvious book smarts and the care he treats his own and others' emotions, Sid is the most intelligent member of the group.
