Recall Alert: Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford needs the owners of 50 Mustang Mach-E SUVs from model year 2021 to bring them back to the dealership for a brake system repair. The company says a problem developed due to an over-the-air update. But it requires a service visit to fix.
Ford tells federal safety officials it sent a recent over-the-air software update to Mach-E SUVs that may have accidentally reset brake system parameters in a small number of the vehicles
Today’s cars use mechanical brakes boosted by an electronic system. The boost amplifies the pressure drivers put on the brake pedal. Without it, the brakes can still stop the car. But drivers may have to push harder on the brake pedal than they’re used to pushing.
This update, Ford says, deactivated the boost. It may have also disabled vehicle stability control features, hill start assist, and some pre-collision functions. That could leave drivers with a car that handles differently than they’re accustomed to and no warning of the changes.
Ford says it knows of no accidents but 13 warranty claims related to the issue.
An over-the-air update caused the problem. But dealers need physical access to the cars to fix it. Dealers will update calibrations to correct all of the issues.
