Evander Kane's efforts to land with a new NHL team took an interesting turn with the league investigating claims he violated COVID protocols while with the San Jose Sharks' AHL affiliate. This comes on the heels of Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland confirming his interest in the 30-year-old winger.

Speculation persists over possible suitors for the embattled winger. TSN's Shawn Simpson tweeted Kane could already have a one-year prorated deal with the Oilers worth $1.5 million. However, there's yet to be confirmation this has taken place. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported the investigation could prevent the winger from signing with another club, at least for the short term.

Despite Kane's personal baggage, he's a proven power forward who led the Sharks in scoring last season with 22 goals and 49 points in 56 games. The opportunity to sign him to a bargain contract is tempting for clubs with Stanley Cup aspirations or, in the case of the Oilers, a team desperate to avoid missing the playoffs.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins were thought to be among the interested parties. However, The Athletic's Joe Smith reported the Lightning dropped out of the bidding on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Boston Hockey Now's Jimmy Murphy cited sources saying the Bruins are believed to have at least made an inquiry. However, head coach Bruce Cassidy indicated general manager Don Sweeney hasn't consulted him about signing Kane.

Earlier this week, TSN's Darren Dreger included the Florida Panthers with the Oilers and Lightning as the top-three suitors for Kane. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman wondered if the Carolina Hurricanes might be interested. There's no indication either club has spoken with the Kane camp but that doesn't mean they haven't made inquiries.
