A Swedish soccer player took the phrase "married to the game" a little too seriously, according to his soon to be ex-wife.
RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg signed a transfer deal with the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS) in December. While switching countries to live and play soccer in is certainly a difficult transition for anyone to make, it’s been a harder transition for his wife, Shanga, and his two children, Florence and Siena.
That’s because since the move to the MLS side, Emil has essentially ghosted his family, according to Shanga. This unfortunate series of events has led Shanga to file for divorce.
"We will part ways. Words I thought I would never utter after two children and 19 years together and that still feels unreal," she wrote in Swedish in an Instagram post that has since been deleted. 'I have loved you more than anything and always supported you. But even love has its limits. The greatest love is my children and I want them to know their worth just as I know mine. Being taken for granted and neglected is not love."
Emil, 32, and Shanga, 31, had been together for nearly two decades, according to the DailyMail. But after starting his life in New York, Emil has had no contact with his wife or children.

"A new start in New York was apparently a new start for you and your life. It was just that I, being a child, did not know about it beforehand," her post continued. "But it became painfully clear quickly. In the newspapers, we have read and seen that you are doing well and are 'enjoying every moment'. You also have future plans. We didn't know about them either.
"If the reporters even knew you've been talking to them more than your family these past few months. Since you haven't communicated at all, apart from insisting that you can't explain your actions, let time tell what it was you wanted to achieve by ghosting your family."
Emil has yet to address his side of the story, but at this point, it's doubtful he will. At any rate, this is a heartbreaking development for the Forseberg family.
