Common cold
The common cold is a viral infection that affects the upper respiratory tract. It is a highly contagious illness that can be caused by different types of viruses. Symptoms of the common cold include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, and mild body aches. Although it is usually a mild illness, it can be quite bothersome and can interfere with daily activities.
There is no cure for the common cold, and treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms. Over-the-counter medications such as Actifed, Humex, and Dolirhume are commonly used to alleviate symptoms. However, it is important to note that the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) has recently issued a warning about the potential risk of heart attacks and strokes associated with these medications.
According to the ANSM, there is a possible link between the use of these cold medications and an increased risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) or cerebrovascular accident (stroke). It is advised to exercise caution when using these medications, especially for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or a history of stroke. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any over-the-counter cold medications to assess the potential risks and benefits.
