Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB)

What are the Reasons for Delay in CRA Payments?

There are several reasons why payments from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) might be delayed. The most common reasons are listed below.

  • If a scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the payment will be processed on the next business day, causing a slight delay.
  • Changes in your personal circumstances can affect your eligibility for benefits and may result in delayed payments.
  • Errors in your tax returns or reassessments can delay your payments.
  • Providing incorrect or incomplete information on your applications can lead to delays.
  • In the event of a recipient’s passing, the CRA will adjust benefit payments, leading to delays.
  • Delays can occur due to processing times at your bank, even if the CRA issues the payment on time.
  • Occasionally, system errors or technical issues within the CRA’s processing systems can cause delays.
  • If you receive your benefits by cheque, postal service delays can affect the timely receipt of your payments.

How to Check CRA Payments Status?

To check your CRA account payments and balances, you or your representative can sign in to your online CRA account and follow these steps. However, before checking for the payment, ensure enough time has passed for processing. For online payments, allow 3 business days. For payments made by cheque or money order, allow 10 business days plus mailing time.

  1. Go to the CRA website and sign in to your online account. If you are an individual, sign in to My Account. If you are a business, sign in to My Business Account.
  2. For individuals, select “Accounts and payments” to see your account balance, available payments, and instalment payments.
  3. For businesses, select “View and pay the account balance.”
  4. Check the listed payments to confirm that your payment has been received and correctly applied to your account. Payments not applied to a specific tax year will be shown in the “Available payment(s)” section.
  5. If you cannot access your online account or if there is an issue with the payment not appearing, contact the CRA by phone for assistance.
