Here's Why We Think Cameco (TSE:CCO) Is Well Worth Watching
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Cameco (TSE:CCO). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Cameco's Improving Profits
In the last three years Cameco's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, Cameco's EPS grew from CA$0.23 to CA$0.59, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 156% year-on-year growth like that. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Cameco shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 1.0% to 13%, and revenue is growing. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. While crystal balls don't exist, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for Cameco's future EPS 100% free.
Are Cameco Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a CA$35b company like Cameco. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at CA$73m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Cameco, with market caps over CA$11b, is around CA$11m.
Cameco offered total compensation worth CA$8.0m to its CEO in the year to December 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Should You Add Cameco To Your Watchlist?
Cameco's earnings per share growth have been climbing higher at an appreciable rate. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The drastic earnings growth indicates the business is going from strength to strength. Hopefully a trend that continues well into the future. Cameco is certainly doing some things right and is well worth investigating. One of Buffett's considerations when discussing businesses is if they are capital light or capital intensive. Generally, a company with a high return on equity is capital light, and can thus fund growth more easily. So you might want to check this graph comparing Cameco's ROE with industry peers (and the market at large).
Although Cameco certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see companies with more skin in the game, then check out this handpicked selection of Canadian companies that not only boast of strong growth but have strong insider backing.
