Possible Northern Lights Viewing Tonight, with Sunshine in the Forecast for Tomorrow

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Good evening everyone and happy Tuesday. After shower chances grazed the county during the morning hours today, clouds eventually broke apart leaving us with some sunshine this afternoon into this evening. Clear skies aren’t expected to last long, with cloud cover returning to the forecast by the early morning hours of Wednesday. Right now the latest computer model runs keep us dry for much of the day Wednesday, with a few clouds returning during the afternoon hours. This will set us up for a more active day Thursday, with showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for much of the day.

The latest K-index forecast shows higher values expected later tonight into tomorrow morning. This means the potential to see the northern lights later tonight into tomorrow morning is more likely compared to what we normally see. While K-Index values are in our favor, cloud cover likely won’t be in our favor as clouds continue to increase during the overnight hours tonight. The best chance to see the northern lights will be up in the valley, where cloud cover is last to increase during the early morning hours of Wednesday.

I mentioned it before, but fog will likely develop during the overnight hours tonight. It will begin to form over southern parts of the county first, with central areas seeing fog develop early Wednesday morning. This will likely reduce visibility to start your Wednesday, and could cause some concerns for travel early on in the day. Overnight low temperatures will be a big contributing factor to the fog developing, as lows fall back to meet actual air temperatures. Lows tonight are expected to fall back into the mid and upper 50s for most areas, very close to, if not at dew point temperatures for most places in the county. Winds are also expected to be light during the overnight hours, further helping fog to develop.

A shift in the computer models works in our favor for tomorrow, with drier weather now expected. A few fair weather clouds could build in during the afternoon, along with the chance for an isolated shower or two over Southern Aroostook county. High temperatures by the afternoon will be seasonable for this time of year, with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s by late in the afternoon. Winds will still be light during the daytime hours tomorrow, not having much of an impact on the forecast.
