Rainfall warning issued for Metro Vancouver

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver, including the North Shore, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, and Howe Sound.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Metro Vancouver, including the North Shore, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, and Howe Sound.

From Friday evening until overnight Saturday, a total of 60 to 90 millimetres of rain is expected to fall around the region.

“A series of storms will bring periods of heavy rain and a warmer airmass to the B.C. coast,” the warning says. “The first storm will potentially bring heavy rain to Squamish and the northern and eastern sections of Metro Vancouver.”

The weather service also warns of more storms this weekend and early next week, but isn’t sure where the worst of it will be felt.

“There is low to moderate confidence in the exact location and timing of the heaviest rain for the subsequent storms,” it says.

Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, and may also cause localized flooding in low-lying areas. It also says melting snow from the mountains could contribute to potential flooding.
