Shane McMahon 'out of' WWE after rumors of Royal Rumble backlash
Shane McMahon rumors are swirling after apparent he apparently drew heat backstage at the Royal Rumble in St. Louis.
The website Ringside News first reported that McMahon, the 52-year-old son of WWE’s CEO and biggest shareholder Vince McMahon, was “quietly let go” by the company after rubbing producers and wrestlers the wrong way at the Royal Rumble.
He was reportedly supposed to appear at WWE’s Elimination Chamber event in Saudi Arabia, but those plans have been scrapped.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful added that the news is “likely true.”
“Though he wasn’t listed as a producer internally for the Royal Rumble, he helped put the match together, which he’s done before in the past. We’re told he was integral in a lot of changes in a match that was already heavily changing as is,” Sapp tweeted.
Longtime wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer added that Shane McMahon is “out of the company” after there was a “lot of heat” — the wrestling terminology for backlash — over his booking role in the battle royal. It’s unclear if his contract is terminated or he is going back on hiatus.
McMahon had been out of WWE for about a year before entering at No. 28 as a surprise entrant in the Rumble on Saturday.
He has reportedly been on a part-time talent contract rather than being employed by the company as an executive. His sister, Stephanie McMahon, and her husband, Paul Levesque (Triple H), have executive roles.
With any WWE story like this, you have to keep your head on a swivel and wonder whether it’s real or something that is a part of their characteristically surreal storyline — or a little bit of both.
