Major PS5 upgrade is coming in 2024, but you better start saving

With the Summer Games Fest and all related events behind us, rumours of an upgraded PS5 Pro model have gone quiet. Sony is yet to take the opportunity to make an announcement, leading to speculation that the console has either been delayed, or cancelled altogether. However, a new report suggests that the PS5 Pro is still in development, and better still, is on track for a surprise late 2024 release date. If the rumours are true, then you might want to start saving now, because the new and improved PS5 Pro should be available in time for Christmas.

The new report comes from Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, who claims that developers have been told that any game released after September 15 will need to support the PS5 Pro.

While Henderson points out that this doesn't mean the console will necessarily launch on this date, it certainly suggests that Sony has a 2024 release in mind.

Previous reports hinted at a November release date for the PS5 Pro, which means we may hear more about the console during the Tokyo Game Show in September.

Sony has confirmed plans to attend the event, which will be the first time it has appeared at TGS in five years. For international fans, expect a PlayStation Direct conference to take place shortly.

Judging by the list of PS5 Pro specs obtained earlier this year, the new and improved PlayStation console could be worth checking out.

According to the Sony documents, the PS5 Pro should perform about 45% faster than the current model. The larger GPU will reportedly use faster system memory to improve ray-tracing by up to three times.

The PS5 Pro CPU will be the same as the current model, but will have a mode that can increase performance by around 10%. 

“Trinity has a mode that targets 3.85GHz CPU frequency," reads a report on The Verge. "Sony will offer developers the ability to pick between a 'standard mode' at 3.5GHz or the 'high CPU frequency mode' at 3.85GHz."

Finally, developers will have access to more system memory with the PS5 Pro, which should make it easier to improve resolutions and increase frame-rates.

Games that deliver significant improvements will reportedly ship with a PS5 Pro Enhanced tag to make it easier for the customer to identify titles that utilise the console's superior architecture.
