A look at Wednesday’s Edmonton weather from Environment Canada.

It’s currently -17 C at the Edmonton Blatchford weather station with 17 km/h winds out of the east southeast and a wind chill of -26.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Edmonton and the surrounding, calling for 10-15 cm of snow.

“Snow will continue to intensify this morning across portions of central and southern Alberta and will move towards the east today,” the warning reads  “Snow will taper off this evening.”

As for the forecast, Wednesday will be cloudy and thick with snowfall blown in on winds climbing to 40 km/h, with a high of 17 C and a wind chill of -28. The snowfall will end overnight, morphing into a 30 per cent chance of flurries, with 2 cm of snow expected, as well as 15 km/h winds and a wind chill of -25. Thursday will remain cloudy, with another 30 per cent chance of flurries, and 15 km/h winds blowing the high to -16 C and the wind chill to -24.

There’s a very real risk of frostbite, so keep your gloves, toques, and coats on!

How to find help

The City of Edmonton’s extreme weather response is still in effect and will be until at least Friday.

Anyone who spots someone who appears to be struggling in the cold can contact 211 to alert the city’s crisis diversion team, a 24/7 service to connect people to any transportation, shelter and support. Call 911 for anyone in immediate distress or in cases of emergency.

The city also offers two shelter shuttles along north and south routes nightly from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. until March 31. During the extreme weather activation, a third shuttle along the west route is added to cover additional areas in the city.

The routes are:

• North route starts from Northgate Transit Centre to downtown.
• South route starts from Southgate Transit Centre to downtown.
• West route starts from Kingsway Transit Centre to downtown.
• From 12:45 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., the north and south winter shelter shuttles focus on transporting people from transit stations to shelters based on need and are not on a set route.

Expanded overnight shelter has also been activated, with Al Rashid Mosque, 13070 113 St., open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. during the extreme weather responses. It provides up to 50 spaces to supplement the existing shelter capacity funded by the Government of Alberta.

In addition to 24/7 shelter sites, day shelter spaces are operational at:

• Bissell Centre, 10530 96 St.: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
• Boyle Street Community Services, 15308 Stony Plain Road: Seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
• Christian Care Centre, The Mustard Seed, 10137 150 St.: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Tuesday to Friday.

Meanwhile, the Navigation Centre, operated by the Government of Alberta and Hope Mission, offers access to 24/7 emergency shelter, income and ID support, health services, housing support and a pet-friendly service. The Centre is in the basement of the Karis Centre,10302 107 St., and is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
