VANOUVER -- As their trip through western Canada, the Detroit Red Wings are hoping they can put together a better effort against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.

The Red Wings are licking their wounds after a wild game against the Edmonton Oilers. They were unable to keep Connor McDavid at bay, as the best player in the world notched six assists in an 8-4 win for the Oilers. To make matters worse, goaltender Ville Husso had to leave the game due to injury. The netminder had just come back from an ailment, having to make a rehab assignment with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Coming into Thursday, the Red Wings are fifth in the Atlantic Division, three points back of the Tampa Bay Lightning for third in the division. They still hold the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of the New Jersey Devils.

The Canucks have continued to cruise since the All-Star break, and definitely deserving of the title of the best team in hockey right. They are 3-1-1 since the break, winning each of their last two games. Vancouver has regained the best record in the league, sitting four points above Boston Bruins. Following their win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, they are 10 points in front of the Vegas Golden Knights for first in the Pacific Division.

The Wings won the first meeting of the season between the two at home last Saturday, and won have five straight matchups against the Canucks.
