Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning, advising of significant rainfall for the Kingston area expected to begin either tonight or early in the morning of Thursday, Apr. 7, 2022.

Specifically, the warning is issued for the Kingston, Odessa, and Frontenac Islands areas.

“Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 30 mm are expected by the time the rain tapers off Friday morning. Locally, higher rainfall amounts to 40 mm are possible,” Environment Canada said in the warning.

Rain, heavy at times, is expected, and with the ground already near saturation, it has little ability to absorb further rainfall, the national weather agency said. The large amount of rain may lead to localize flooding in low-lying areas.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks,” Environment Canada said.

Environment Canada advises residents to consult their local Conservation Authority for information regarding flooding. Currently, Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority states the area’s flood status is normal, though the Gananoque river system was under a flood watch in late March.
