In the second of our series of Quest features, we highlight five Kootenay experiences perfect for making the season brighter.

From bowling to movies, cozying up with classic reads, farmer’s markets, and cheering on our favourite local hockey team - these family-friendly destinations are sure to make your holidays unforgettable.

Let’s dive into the magic of the Kootenays and discover the perfect ways to spend time together this season!

As we turn the chapter on a new year, it’s a perfect time to stop into The Gold Rush Bookstore, located within one of Rossland’s heritage buildings at 2063 Washington Street.

Sip a cup of David'sTea as you get lost in a good book or pre-order your favourite author on their online store!

Praised by Quest participants for its friendly atmosphere and diverse selection, the bookstore has become a cherished destination.

“The staff are always welcoming, and the variety of books is incredible,” shared one participant.

The unique offerings of this beloved bookstore also include a monthly book club, and for those on-the-go you can subscribe to Libro.fm which offers a large audiobook selection, while giving back to independent bookstores.

Another local favourite is Glenmerry Bowl in Trail.

With 12 bowling lanes, a mini-golf course, and a lounge serving pizza and cocktails, this entertainment hub has been a staple of the West Kootenay community since 1974.

Run by the Ferraro family since 2022, they continue to host bowling leagues, private parties, and casual outings for anyone looking for a fun time.

The inviting atmosphere, great food, themed cocktails, and accommodating hours make Glenmerry Bowl the perfect place to make new memories.

Built in 1927 and lovingly restored, the Royal Theatre in Trail is a local staple that beckons movie lovers to experience the magic of the big screen.

This cinematic gem blends old-world charm with modern luxury.

Guests sink into VIP luxury recliners while enjoying first-run movies, operas, ballets, and more on a 50-foot screen with Dolby Digital surround sound.

Locally owned and operated, the theatre is the talk of the town for its comfortable setting and delicious popcorn - made with real butter!

Whether enjoyed with family, friends, as a date night excursion, or a business or community event, the Royal delivers an unforgettable experience for all.

Quest participants rated it “the best theatre around”, and we wholeheartedly agree.

For the sport enthusiasts, there’s nothing like cheering on the Trail Smoke Eaters at their home games.

The Smoke Eaters have been a cornerstone of the Kootenay sports scene, entertaining hockey fans since the 1920s.

Their legacy and commitment to community continues under the ownership of Rich and Annie Murphy who were awarded the 2024 Business People of the Year at the Chamber’s business excellence awards.

Over the holidays, and throughout the season, Smokies games are a lively gathering spot for locals and visitors alike.

Fans can also browse their store, open year-round, to grab merchandise and show their team pride. The family-friendly atmosphere, paired with a “professional vibe and friendly service”, creates the perfect setting for a night out.

Looking for a quieter, hands-on experience? The IncrEDIBLE Farmer’s Markets in Trail, Fruitvale, and Rossland offer families a chance to connect with local makers, bakers and growers.

With affordable access to sustainable food and goods in a welcoming community space, the farmer’s markets provide a unique opportunity for kids to learn about sustainability, local food systems, and the importance of supporting small businesses.

Market participants can meet local farmers, explore how produce is cultivated, and discover the benefits of choosing fresh, local ingredients.

With live music and a variety of vendors, these markets are a must-visit for anyone looking to support community and mindful living.

The Kootenays are a perfect place for family fun, where every destination tells a story of community, creativity, and connection.

Whether you're immersed in the pages of a new book, hearing the crack of a bowling pin, enjoying the surround sound of the latest blockbuster, cheering at a hockey game, or exploring the sights and sounds of a farmers' market, there's fun to be found in every corner of this region, rich in history and culture.
