Crystal Palace vs Man Utd ref to offer views from head-mounted camera

Premier League referee Jarred Gillett will wear a head-mounted camera for today’s Manchester United-Crystal Palace match at Selhurst Park. In what is being billed as a “one-off,” the footage captured during the match will be incorporated into a program from Premier League Productions “aimed at offering further insight and education into the demands of officiating in the Premier League,” according to a news release. This is the first such implementation for the top English league, but the German Bundesliga debuted its own RefCam in February, when referee Daniel Schlager wore it for a Frankfurt-Wolfsburg match. That resulted in an all-access video that appeared in March. The IFAB, the Premier League, Professional Game Match Officials Limited and both clubs all consented to this use. The video will not be available live, and the device will be connected to the referee’s usual communications system.
