Two Alumni Compete in Olympic Qualifiers

Pittsburgh, Pa. – A pair of former Duquesne University women's basketball players are looking to help their respective international squads get to Paris as they're competing in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments this weekend. Fatou Pouye is with the Senegal squad while Nina Aho is with Hungary.

"We are incredibly proud of Nina and Fatou as they pursue a berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics," head coach Dan Burt said. "How many women's basketball programs are rooting for two alumni to go to the Olympics at this time of the year? I'm sure the answer is not many."

From February 8-11, 16 teams will participate in four global FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments to determine which countries will make up the field for the Olympic Games. Despite already being assured a spot in Paris, hosts France and the 2022 FIBA Women's World Cup winners, the United States will be among the 16 teams, with the other 14 squads battling for the remaining 10 quota spots. In the groups with France and the USA, the top two teams will obtain Paris quota spots while the top three will secure quotas in the other two groups.

Pouye, a native of Kaolack, Senegal, played one season with the Dukes in 2021-22 after spending four years at Western Kentucky. She appeared in all 28 games while making 15 starts for Duquesne. Her 12.3 points per game ranked second on the team and 18th in the conference while sitting second on the team in field goal percentage (.471). Pouye averaged 3.6 rebounds per contest while shooting .355 percent from behind the arc and .714 percent from the charity stripe. The Glasgow Christian Academy (Ky.) product registered a career-high 31 points at Kent State while shooting 9-for-16 from the field, 10-for-14 from the free throw line and 3-for-5 from deep. Pouye carded 16 games in double-figures while posting five 20+ point performances for the Dukes.

"Fatou has worked and grinded incredibly hard to make the National Team. While at Duquesne, this was always one of her primary goals. We are so excited to see Fatou represent Senegal in the Qualifiers," Burt continued.

Aho, a native of Budapest, Hungary, played three seasons at Duquesne while appearing in 68 career games and making 47 starts. In her final season on the Bluff, Aho started in all 29 contests while being tabbed to the 2019-20 Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team. She averaged 6.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game while finishing third in the A-10 and 44th in the country in assists/turnover ratio (2.1). Her 3.1 assists ranked 12th in the league as she scored in double-figures in 10 games for the Dukes. The Veres Pálné Gimnázium product registered 20 games with three-plus assists while recording a season-high seven at Pitt.

"Nina has been spectacular all year with her club team and her appointment to the National Team is something that we always believe she would achieve," said Burt.

Pouye and Senegal are in WOQT 2 while Aho and Hungary are in WOQT 4. Senegal will square off against Nigeria while Hungary is scheduled to take on Canada, both in which start today, February 8.
