APPLETON — Looking for an escape from the Wisconsin tundra to a summery Greek island? In need of some upbeat tunes to shake off the winter blues? You can look no further than the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, where tickets are still available for "Mamma Mia!," which runs Dec.17-22.

The week-long stop in Appleton is part of the musical's 25th Anniversary North American Tour, which kicked off in October 2023. "Mamma Mia!" has a special place in the heart of Appleton's theater scene — back in 2003, it was the first Broadway musical to play at the newly built Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.

While the show is selling quick, tickets are still available. Here's what to know before you go:

When are show times?

What is 'Mamma Mia!' about?

Since it premiered on Broadway in 2001, "Mamma Mia!" has become a musical theater modern classic. The 2008 movie musical, starring big names like Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, and 2018 sequel brought an even wider audience to the show.

"Mamma Mia!" is the fictional story of Sophie, a young woman who is soon to be married but dreams of being walked down the aisle by her father, whom she has never met and whose identity she does not know. Unbeknownst to her mother, Donna, Sophie invites to the wedding the three men who could possibly be her father, who she identifies from Donna's diary entries.

On the eve of Sophie's wedding, Donna unexpectedly reunites with three flings from her past, as well as her two best friends and former bandmates of Donna and the Dynamos. The show is set to the catchy music of Swedish pop group ABBA and set on a fictional, idyllic island located somewhere off the coast of Greece.

Is there anything else I should know?

The PAC's website advises theatergoers to downtown Appleton at least 45 minutes before the show starts. Doors to the lobby will open an hour before the show, and theater doors open around 30 minutes before.

Don't get there late, or you may be required to wait outside the theater until between songs or scenes.

Concessions and merchandise are available for purchase in the PAC's lobby. Snacks, bottled water and drinks purchased in PAC souvenir cups with lids can be brought into the theater.

For "Mamma Mia!", the bar is offering two specialty beverages: "Sipping Through My Fingers," a cocktail containing whiskey, lemon liqueur, lime juice and club soda, and "Super Trouper Spritzer," a non-alcoholic beverage consisting of cranberry lemonade, lemon-lime soda and cherries.
