Estevan Comprehensive School is transforming its cafeteria into the sunny shores of Greece with its vibrant production of Mamma Mia! This lively show, brimming with ABBA’s iconic hits, dynamic performances, and the talents of dedicated students, promises an unforgettable theatre experience.

Set on a beautiful Greek island, Mamma Mia! follows Sophie, a bride-to-be who secretly invites three men from her mother Donna’s past to her wedding, hoping to discover which one is her father. As Sophie’s wedding day approaches, secrets unravel and relationships are tested in this heartwarming story filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable music.

At the heart of the production is Vidya Dela Pena, stepping into the spotlight as Donna. For Dela Pena, the role has been a transformative journey. “This year, I found my family,” she said.

After debuting as Sebastian in The Little Mermaid last year, Dela Pena admitted she was initially hesitant.“I didn’t really go all out because I was afraid of being judged,” she said. But encouraged by castmates, Dela Pena fully embraced her role as Donna this year.

“It’s been stressful, and I cried a lot during rehearsals,” she said. “But it’s also been so much fun.”

Her love for musicals has only grown, with Dancing Queen standing out as her favourite number to perform.

For first-time performer Landry Deatherage, a member of the chorus, the journey to opening night has been filled with excitement and camaraderie.“At first, everyone was nervous, but eventually, we all came together,” they said. “It’s been so much fun.”

Deatherage encouraged other students to give theatre a try. “If you’re nervous, everyone else is too. It’s such a great experience,” they said.

Both Deatherage and Dela Pena expressed gratitude to the community for their support and urged people to attend the show.

“We worked really hard on it. I think we did a really good job, and I think you guys will enjoy it too,” Deatherage said.

“We’ve worked so hard, and I think you’ll love it,” Dela Pena agreed.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Kerison Burnett has been navigating the rewarding challenges of their first year as stage manager.

“I was part of the stage crew for The Little Mermaid last year, but I wanted a bigger role,” Burnett said. “The directors are open to suggestions, and we’ve built a great team.”

Burnett, who joined high school theatre last year, said working backstage has been a fulfilling experience and encouraged others to get involved.

“It’s a welcoming, supportive environment,” they said. “Even if you’re not confident on stage, you can still make an impact.”

Performances of Mamma Mia! run on Dec. 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. in the ECS cafeteria.
