Grammys
Her debut Grammys performance also featured Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Allison Russell, Lucius, and Jacob Collier

Joni Mitchell performed at the Grammys for the very first time tonight, singing her 1966 hit “Both Sides Now” with a full band that included Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Allison Russell, Lucius, Jacob Collier, and SistaStrings. Mitchell sang while sitting in a regal white-and-gold chair, as did her accompanists. Below, watch Mitchell and the band take the stage at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles for the historic moment.

Previously, Mitchell was a guest at the 2022 Grammys to introduce Brandi Carlile’s performance with Bonnie Raitt. That surprise appearance followed her presence at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2021 and preceded further steps into the public eye, after her retreat following a 2015 brain aneurism. A few months later, she performed with Carlile and others at the Newport Folk Festival, before playing her first headline show in years, in 2023, at Washington’s Gorge Amphitheatre.

Follow along with all of Pitchfork’s coverage of the 2024 Grammys.
