Japan has earmarked an additional 1.500 trillion yen ($9,9 billion) for the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors, funds that come from the supplementary budget presented by the government and that, in part, will go to support the Rapidus foundry in Chiyoda, The Japan Times reported.

The funds also include $7 billion for research and development of next-generation chips and quantum computers, while another $3,16 billion will support local production of advanced chips. These investments come as Japan has made increasing financial commitments to keep pace with the United States and China in developing cutting-edge technologies, especially semiconductors.

The funds are also part of the plan announced by the new prime minister Shigeru Ishiba to support the tech industry with 10 trillion yen (about $66,6 billion) between now and 2030.
