When Is the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil?
The dates for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup have been announced. The competition, which is set for 2027 and will be the tenth Women’s World Cup, will officially take place in Brazil between June 24 and July 25. This will be the first edition of the tournament hosted in Latin America.
Giovanni Infantino, the president of FIFA, made the announcement. The men’s World Cup has been held in Brazil twice, in 1950 and 2014.
The last FIFA Women’s World Cup took place in 2023 and was hosted by Australia and New Zealand, making it the first edition to be held by two countries. Eight different countries have hosted the Women’s World Cup before, with China and the United States hosting twice, and Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Sweden each having hosted once.
Only five different national teams have won the nine FIFA Women’s World Cups, with the United States winning four times. The other winners are Germany, which has won twice, and Japan, Norway, and Spain. No Latin American country has ever won the tournament, though Brazil has gotten closer and has the best team.
This year Brazil had one nominee for the Women’s Ballon d’Or, Corinthians player Gabi Portilho who was instrumental in the team’s silver medal in the discipline at the Olympics. The Olympics also saw the retirement of Marta, perhaps the greatest woman footballer in the history of the sport.
Have to bring this back one more time. Entered international football in a realm, left it in another.
The ban on women's football in Brazil wasn’t lifted until 1981, Marta was born in 1986.
