Dexter (Michael C Hall) himself met his end at the hands of his son Harrison, in retaliation for Dexter murdering Sergeant Logan.
Harrison got away with the killing, as Angela Bishop turned up before the rest of the police could, and gave him the money to get out of town and start a new life.
While it's obviously the end of the road for the titular character, it does leave the door open for a spin-off focusing on Harrison — the subtitle is New Blood, after all — but is it really setting a continuation without Dexter?
"As you can imagine, that’s not the first time I’ve been asked that," showrunner Clyde Phillips told TVLine when they enquired about a potential continuation.
He's definitely up for it, it's just a case of whether network Showtime does, although he did note that the show is "hugely successful" for them.

He added: "It's all in Showtime's hands. If they were to call me and say, 'We want to do Harrison. We want you to figure it out.'
"I'm pretty busy, but I would drop everything I'm doing and jump right into it. I would love to do it, but it's really up to Showtime."
Dexter's original final season was famously criticised by viewers for fizzling out and not providing a real conclusion, with Phillips stating that if he were in charge back in the day, he would have ended the show with Dexter's death. Now, we know that he wasn't joking.
New Blood itself hasn't been free of critique, with critics divided over its quality.
Dexter: New Blood aired on Showtime in the US and on Sky Atlantic in the UK. All episodes of Dexter are also available on NOW.
