The short history of DeLorean marked the automobile. His return mentioned a year ago is confirmed. Still little information except a presentation expected this year and a probable participation of ItalDesign and Karma.

Since the purchase of the rights to the brand in the 90s, the DeLorean Motor Company based in Texas is above all a specialist in the repair or supply of spare parts for the DMC-12 coupe, the only model of the brand. A brand that has gone down in automotive history in several respects: its creation by one of the most admired figures in the American automobile industry of the 70s, its fall into a dark history of suspicion of drug trafficking, or again the participation of the DMC-12 in the films of the Back to the Future series…

ItalDesign in style, Karma in propulsion?

The idea of ​​relaunching the brand is not new. In the mid-2010s, a new law allowing the small series production of old models is emerging in the United States, leaving hope. A law that will have taken much longer than expected to be finalized, delaying the DeLorean project. In the meantime, the market context has changed, and the team is announcing early 2021 a next electric DeLorean.

This announcement has therefore not remained a dead letter, since the company is now announcing a presentation in the course of the year 2022. An announcement accompanied by an illustration showing a car retaining the butterfly doors. An illustration that furiously recalls the one published by ItalDesign in March 2021. An announcement that was positioned in line with the 30th anniversary of the DMC-12, signed precisely by… Giorgetto Giugiaro for his ItalDesign studio.

The company is no longer called DeLorean Motor Company, but DeLorean Motors Reimagined, and its logo has changed. Above all, the boss of this new company is called Joost de Vries. Who also happens to be the boss of Karma Automotive…

So, this new DeLorean, a restored, modernized and electrified version of the DMC-12, or any new coupé based on the models in preparation at Karma?
