Health expert explains how to protect yourself in drastic weather changes

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF)-- All across the Miami Valley, we’ve seen mild temperatures, rain, and even some hail. Those temperatures are expected to drop and could bring us some snow.

Dayton 24/7 Now's, Kysha Hancock caught up with health experts on how these drastic weather changes can affect you. As well as some community members who said the constant changes are not their favorite.

Joseph Allen, regional medical director with Premier Health said frequent fluctuations in weather can definitely cause some disruptions for people. In some cases, people can experience symptoms similar to allergies like a runny nose, coughing or congestion.

Allen said the weather changing allows germs to spread easily, even if we think we’re being safe.

“When it goes from warm to cold is a lot of patients get congregated in a small area. so, we tend to go inside, we tend be around other people a little closer quartered and that allows for distribution of some of those viral things a little bit easier,"

He said there are ways to adjust to protect yourself against these changes, such as eating healthy and continuing to take your necessary medications, keeping your immune system strong.

Hancock also caught up with some people who told her how they feel about the weather changes.

"I don't love the changing in weather. I have two kids. It's really difficult to get them to understand that they have to dress appropriately for the weather. I don't mind the cold but the rain definitely puts a damper on things," said Kasey Hester.

Allen also said if you do start to experience any allergy-like symptoms, Benadryl can be extremely helpful to fight them and when you go out, especially during the holiday season. Wearing a mask can also give you an extra layer of protection.
