Met Office latest on whether Northern Lights could be visible above
Manchester
There are mixed conditions which will all have an effect

Brits could get a glimpse of the stunning Northern Lights tonight - if the conditions are right for it. Large parts of the UK could be in line to witness auroral displays later today (July 24).

It's due to a geomagnetic storm which is taking place today. Northern areas of the UK have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights as a result.

But while the geomagnetic storm means a dazzling display is possible, there are other weather factors which could get in the way. Anyone trying to catch a glimpse of aurora will need a clear and dark night, away from light pollution.

In Greater Manchester, clouds are set to gather throughout this afternoon and evening. Some areas could also see patches of light rain.

It means visibility for the Northern Lights could be poor across the region. The Met Office also says the limited hours of darkness at this time of year could also damage chances of seeing aurora.

According the the latest Met Office space weather forecast, the geomagnetic storm is expected until 11.59pm tonight. It adds: "A Coronal Mass Ejection is likely to arrive early on July 24, giving a peak chance of Strong Geomagnetic Storm (G3) conditions. This may result in auroral displays down to Northern Ireland, northern England and similar geomagnetic latitudes, albeit impeded by the near-full moon and limited hours of darkness."
