Dec. 18—The University of North Texas (UNT) has partnered with Titomic Limited, the world's leading provider of cold spray solutions, to install a customized Titomic Kinetic Fusion (TKF) Cold Spray System. This cutting-edge system will enable UNT's Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing (CAAAM) to drive advanced research, foster industry collaboration, and enhance its educational initiatives.

Cold spray is an innovative technology that sprays metal powders at high speeds to create or repair metal components without the need for melting. This process enables stronger, more durable structures while avoiding issues like warping or thermal damage commonly associated with traditional manufacturing techniques. This significant investment in a novel and highly specialized technology will provide UNT with capabilities rarely available in academic or industrial settings, a news release said.

The TKF system will allow UNT to produce and study multi-metal structures, develop multi-metal coatings that address corrosion and wear, and design repair solutions for high-value components. By enabling the creation of these advanced materials and applications, the technology positions UNT to deliver novel research findings, transformative industrial developments, and enhanced real-world solutions. UNT's leadership in adopting cold spray underscores its commitment to advancing manufacturing innovation and training future leaders in the field.

Titomic's cold spray systems are capable of producing large-scale, high-performance components, including 3D printing titanium structures at a rate of 11 pounds per hour, with minimal size limitations. This scalability allows for groundbreaking applications across industries such as aerospace, defense, and energy, and is in use by Boeing, Rolls Royce, Volvo, Airbus, the U.S. Navy's NAVSEA, and many other leading companies.

Higher education institutions like UNT are at the forefront of translating groundbreaking research into real-world impact. Centers like CAAAM serve as a vanguard for industry, testing and commercializing technologies like cold spray to reshape sectors reliant on advanced manufacturing. This partnership highlights the critical role of academia in developing and deploying transformative solutions that strengthen industrial innovation and global competitiveness.
